“What Did I Do Wrong?”

This is a question we hear a lot from families.

When someone you love is struggling with drugs or alcohol, it’s easy to blame yourself or wonder if you could have done something differently.

You might think:

Did I do something wrong?
Should I have noticed sooner?
Could I have stopped this?
Why can’t I help them?

It’s important to remember that you did not cause your loved one’s drug or alcohol use. You cannot control their choices, and you cannot make changes for them.

You may look back and wish you had said or done something differently. You may have tried to help and found that it didn’t work. That doesn’t mean you have failed. You were trying to deal with a very difficult situation in the best way you could at the time.

How Can PSL Help?

At PSL, we can help you understand more about what your loved one may be going through and how their drug or alcohol use can affect the whole family.

We can also help you focus on you.

This might mean looking at your own wellbeing, learning how to set healthy boundaries, finding different ways to communicate and thinking about what you need to make things better for yourself.

We can’t change your loved one or make them stop using drugs or alcohol. But we can support you to make positive changes in your own life and hopefully improve your relationship with them too.

You don’t have to work everything out on your own. PSL is here to support you.

PSL offers reassurance and support for families who blame themselves for a loved one’s drug or alcohol use, with help for their own wellbeing.
