Can My Loved One Go Into Rehab?

Yes. There are routes into residential rehabilitation through NHS-funded recovery services, as well as the option of accessing rehabilitation privately.

If your loved one would like to explore NHS-funded treatment, the first step is usually to engage with their local drug and alcohol recovery service. They will be able to assess your loved one, talk with them about their circumstances and needs, and work with them to develop a personal recovery and treatment plan.

Depending on where they live, local services include:

The recovery service can discuss the different treatment options available and, where appropriate, the process and eligibility for residential rehabilitation.

Does My Loved One Have to Agree to Rehab?

One of the most important things to remember is that recovery is something your loved one needs to engage with themselves. As a family member or friend, you can encourage them, provide information, listen and support them in taking that first step, but you cannot go through the recovery process on their behalf.

This can be particularly difficult for families who can see that someone needs help but aren’t yet ready to accept it. Remember that support is available for you too, even if your loved one isn’t currently ready to engage.

What About Private Rehab?

There are also private residential rehabilitation services throughout the UK. These can usually be contacted directly and may offer quicker access to residential treatment, although the cost, treatment programmes and level of support can vary considerably between providers.

If you are considering private rehabilitation, it is important to ask questions about the treatment provided, costs, length of stay, aftercare and how the service is regulated before making a decision.
